POIRIER COUNSELLING EDMONTON
Therapy Intensives for
Trauma & Eating Disorders
Focused, uninterrupted healing for deeper, faster progress.
You’ve shown up, week after week, unpacking your story, sitting with hard truths, making slow and steady progress, but something still feels stuck.
Therapy Intensives set aside focused, uninterrupted time for deeper work so you can gently work through plateaus, gain clarity and momentum, and continue with renewed direction.
Therapy that meets you where you are and helps you overcome challenges faster.
Therapy intensives are for you if:
You feel like you’ve hit a plateau in your progress, despite months or years in therapy
You experience unresolved trauma, eating, or body shame challenges
You feel overwhelmed by weekly appointments
You want to accelerate healing in a focused, immersive, and deeply productive session
Dive in, activate, and rewire the stuck points you’ve been experiencing with a Therapy Intensive.
The Poirier Approach
At Poirier Counselling, Katie integrates eating disorder recovery with trauma healing, helping individuals rebuild trust with food and body, reduce shame, and find new ways of relating to themselves through compassion rather than control.
This approach supports you when you feel “stuck” in recovery, exploring the deeper emotional roots beneath the surface of your patterns with eating or body shame.
Give yourself the time you deserve.
Sometimes progress needs more time, space, and focus. Therapy Intensives create an opportunity to process the deeper layers of trauma, attachment, and eating-related patterns in an extended session compared to a regular hourly session.
These extended sessions allow you to explore patterns, process stored experiences in your body and mind, and make meaningful progress without the constraints of shorter appointments.

INTEGRATION
Debrief and reflect on areas of insight, relief, and transformation, and wrap up with a continued care roadmap to support your growth long after your session ends.
These methods are blended and tailored to your unique needs to support meaningful shifts in how you feel, respond, and relate to yourself and others.
-
A therapy approach that helps you process painful memories, often within 1-5 sessions, such as trauma symptoms, recurring distress, nightmares, sleep issues, and body shame struggles. ART is known to reduce distress from past experiences, increased emotional freedom, and more energy for life.
-
Exploration and integration of different parts of yourself, such as your relationship to food and body, shame, isolation, societal pressure, and protective patterns. This modality brings an understanding of self, a compassionate connection to body, and empowerment to explore healthier patterns. You don’t have to be “sick enough” to do this work — anyone ready to change can take the next step.
-
Discover and clarify your values (what really matters to you) and take small, meaningful steps to embody those values, even when things feel uncomfortable. This combines mindfulness, self-compassion, and practical strategies to help you feel more flexible, grounded, and in control of your choices.
-
Notice what’s really happening under the surface of your feelings and create healthier ways to connect and respond. EFT focuses on building stronger, more secure connections with yourself or in your relationships by exploring patterns of attachment, emotional needs, and communication.
Collaborative Treatment for Clinicians
Therapy Intensives serve as an excellent adjunct to ongoing therapy. These sessions help clients break through plateaus, integrate insights faster, and work on areas that are difficult to address in weekly sessions. Collaboration with a client’s primary therapist is encouraged through a Release of Information for continuity of care and effective treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
The name can be misleading! This format involves concentrated care that actually feels deeply empowering and clarifying.
While moments of intensity are likely as in any therapeutic journey, the Intensive format is carefully structured and paced to your needs.
Folks have shared that 4-5 hours of an Intensive (even two days in a row) has felt less draining and overwhelming than 1 hour of ongoing therapy.
With this extended time, we can give protective parts of ourselves room to breathe, be heard, and unburden.
-
This depends on the complexity of your goals. Some goals can be met in 1 day (4-5 hours), and others benefit from 2 days (8-12 hours).
During our free 30-minute consultation, we will discuss your goals and create a care plan that works for you.
-
You'll leave with a personalized post-Intensive plan to help you maintain progress.
Ongoing support is available through follow-up Therapy Intensives (either in-person or virtual) that can vary in length depending on your needs.
Momentum often flows with your regular therapy work after an Intensive, and sometimes a follow-up Intensive session can support that process.
-
Absolutely! Therapy Intensives work very well as a complement to therapy.
Intensives can supplement the relationship you’ve already built with your therapist, working as an adjunct to help address and resolve any stuck points and break through any plateaus that may be coming up in therapy.
If you feel comfortable with me connecting with your ongoing therapist, we can explore having me consult with them to best support you.
